Nick Candy leads £1m drive to oust London mayor Sadiq Khan
A property tycoon has led a fundraising drive to
raise more than £1 million in an attempt to oust
Sadiq Khan as mayor of London.

Nick Candy, 48, has been approaching City grandees
and wealthy Londoners for donations to support
Shaun Bailey, the Conservative mayoral candidate,
ahead of the critical campaign period before the
election in May.

The mayoral campaign has raised more than £1
million in the past year, a large portion of which
has been received in the past few weeks thanks to
Candy’s efforts.

Candy, a self-made billionaire, warned that
investors and businesses were at risk of
abandoning London because of Khan’s track record
on crime.

He told The Times: “This is turning into the
crime election and Shaun Bailey has the right
policies to get crime under control and make our
streets safe again.

“Every single person — whether you’re from a
poor community, a middle-class community, or an
upper-class community — is affected by crime. If
we carry on as we are with Sadiq Khan as mayor,
then crime will get worse, people will leave
London, money will leave London, tourists won’t
come to London, and businesses won’t set up in
London. Sadiq has had five years to fix London’s
problems but, instead, he has let them get worse
while constantly blaming others and not taking any
responsibility.”

Policing crime is set to become a key battleground
in the mayoral campaign, amid criticism of the
levels of knife crime in the city and the handling
of a vigil for Sarah Everard at Clapham Common at
the weekend.

Candy, who is best known for developing the luxury
One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge with
his brother, Christian Candy, built a property
empire with a £6,000 loan from his grandmother in
1995.

The mayor’s office did not respond to a request
for comment.
