Suspected Senegal rebels attack police post ZIGUINCHOR, Senegal (AFP) - Suspected separatist
rebels have attacked a paramilitary police brigade
in the troubled Casamance region for the second
time this week, residents said on Wednesday.
The attack took place on Tuesday night in the
village of Affiniam some 30 kilometres (18 miles)
from the regional capital Ziguinchor and left
three officers injured.
"The Affiniam gendarmerie post received
reinforcements after the first attack but the
rebels persisted in showing their presence," said
one resident.
On Monday one paramilitary officer was killed,
five injured and another left missing in the same
village.
The Casamance Movement of Democratic Forces (MFDC)
has been fighting for independence since 1982 in
the region, which is separated from the rest of
Senegal by Gambia in West Africa's longest-running
conflict.
On December 20, 13 people were killed in fighting
between Senegalese troops and rebels. A month
earlier 10 civilians had been killed in a
suspected MFDC attack near Ziguinchor. Source - AFP
