UK sacks doctors from nine Nigerian universities Medical regulatory authorities in the United
Kingdom on Wednesday came hard on nine Nigerian
universities barring their medical school
graduates from practicing in the UK. This was the
sequel to de-acreditation of the affected tertiary
institutions by the Medical and Dental Council of
Nigeria.
Also the affected graduates cannot sit for the
Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board
(PLAB), the examination that enables non-UK
medical graduates to undertake post graduate
medical training in the country.
A source in the GMC, UK’s equivalent of the
Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), said
the affected universities whose graduates were
barred: University of Benin, Ambrose Ali
University, Ekpoma, University of Nigeria, Nsukka,
University of Port Harcourt, University of Jos,
Ebonyi State University, Igbinedion University
College of Health Sciences, Ladoke Akintola
University of Technology (LAUTECH) and the Nnamdi
Azikiwe University, Awka.
Specifically in the case of the University of
Benin and the Igbinedion University College of
Health Sciences, it only applies to those who
graduated on or after April 1, 2010. Whiile the
case applies to those who graduated after December
10, 2010.
Dr Victor Gbenro, Head, Registration of the MDCN,
explained that MDCN had earlier revoked the
accreditation of the programmes in the affected
schools and accordingly advised its UK
counterpart, adding however that the programmes
had since been re-accredited.
He said in view of the development, it was up to
the GMC to re-evaluate its decision on the
affected Nigerian tertiary institution.
“The following medical schools are currently
listed in the Avicenna Directory of medical
schools but, at the present time, the GMC is not
registering or issuing a licence to practise to
graduates who hold primary medical qualifications
obtained from those schools. Graduates from these
schools are not permitted to make a booking for or
to take the Professional and Linguistic
Assessments Board (PLAB) test.
“Please note: If you are thinking of booking the
PLAB test and are the holder of one of these
primary medical qualifications, we strongly
recommend that you contact the GMC before booking
the test to ensure that your qualification is
acceptable.
“Due to the complex nature of establishing
whether a primary medical qualification meets our
criteria such enquiries may take time to assess so
please ensure you contact us well in advance of
the closing date for the
PLAB sitting you wish to attend”, he stated.
