Ghana Makes Remarkable Progress In Malaria Control Ghana is said to be making remarkable progress
when it comes to Malaria Control due to some
remarkable interventions by the Ghana Health
Service to ensure the country reaches its MDG
target of zero deaths from Malaria.
According to the Deputy Program Manager of the
Malaria Control Program under the Ghana Health
Service, Dr. Keziah Malm, the prevalence rate in
Northern Ghana remains high in spite of the
successes achieved with eradicating the disease in
other regions of the country.
'In the three northern regions which has the
highest burden of Malaria, we have malaria
prevalence ranging from about 48 percent to 51
percent'
In an interview on Radio Univers' flagship health
show 'Good Health', Dr. Malm noted that more
education is needed to ensure a successful
eradication of the disease in the Upper West,
Upper East and Northern Regions of Ghana.
The 2009 National Malaria Control Programme Annual
Report indicated that malaria, which has been a
major cause of poverty and low productivity in
Ghana accounted for about 32.5 percent of all OPD
attendances and 48.8 percent of under five years
admissions in the country.
Ghana in 1999 committed itself to the Roll Back
Malaria (RBM) initiative and developed a strategic
framework to guide its implementation aimed at
strengthening health services through multi and
inter-sectoral partnerships and making Malaria
treatment and prevention strategies more widely
available. Source - Jonas Nyabor
