NGO Calls For Tree Plantings To Save The Environment The Chief Executive Officer of Global Media
Foundation, a human right non-governmental
organization, Raphael Godlove Ahenu, has urged to
religious bodies to establish tree plantations to
help save the environment.
According to Mr Ahenu, the environment was part of
God's creation and if religious looked unconcerned
and allows it to be degraded, God would not
forgive them.
Mr. Ahenu was addressing staff and Students of
Dormaa Senior High School at Dormaa Ahenkro in the
Brong-Ahafo at a forum to mark this year's World
Environment Day.
The forum was organized by Global Media Foundation
and more than one thousand students attended the
forum
He stressed the need for religious to set up a
special fund for tree plantation exercises and
environmental cleanliness.
The global theme for this year's celebration was
'Raise Your Voice, Not the Sea'.
He said aside the spiritual development, churches
should also help to inculcate in their members the
need to safeguard the environment and promote
personal hygiene.
Mr Ahenu said religious bodies commanded high
respect in society and that when the clergy began
to take the responsibility to promote
environmental sustainability their followers would
join them.
He was apprehensive about the way filth had
engulfed cities and towns and challenged
Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to
take radical steps to address the poor sanitation
problems in the country.
Mr Ahenu advised educational institutions,
corporate, religious and civil society and
non-governmental organizations to redirect their
attention to tree plantation. Source - Pat Aboagyewaa
