Rowing and Canoeing Association chef appeals for equipment
THE Vice-President of the Ghana Rowing and
Canoeing Association (GRCA), Kamal Sulley, has
appealed to the government to help provide
equipment for the growth and development of the
sport in the country.
He contended that as an Olympic sport, Rowing and
Canoeing was experiencing rapid growth among the
youth in the coastal areas such as Ada, Keta,
Akosombo and Senchi for which reason it was
necessary for the state to help equip the
association to develop the sport along these
coastal communities.

“We need more fibre glass boats which is needed
for rowing and canoeing, they are special kinds of
boats, we are appealing to the government to help
us secure these boats,” he said.

Development through schools
“We are currently liaising with the Ghana
Education Service (GES) to introduce the sport at
the basic level, but our discipline operates near
water bodies, despite that, we want all first and
second cycle students to know and appreciate the
game,” he told the Daily Graphic.

Already the association has begun a programme in
Ada where schoolchildren are made to paddle the
canoe across the river to their various schools.

“Our focus is now on the youth, when you look
at the youth around water bodies you will realise
that they are more into fishing and paddling the
canoe, and we need to tap these talents and
harness them for the national,” Mr Sulley
added.

Untapped potential
He is hopeful that with the huge potential that
abounds in the country, Ghana would produce many
athletes to develop to be competitive at the
international level.

Last year, some athletes represented Ghana at a
championship in Morocco and their performance has
further strengthened his belief that the many more
talents abound in the country which need to be
identified and groomed into top stars.

“We are on the verge of recruiting more
athletes into the discipline, train and harness
their talents for the national cause,” Mr
Sulley, who has submitted his form to contest an
executive position in the Ghana Olympic Committee
when it goes to the polls on March 15, said.
