16 dead as two KIA Granbird buses collide on Accra-Kumasi highway Sixteen people have died after two KIA Granbird
buses they were travelling in collided at the Akim
Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway.
The passengers from both vehicles comprising 13
males and 3 females died on the spot.
Several passengers sustained serious injuries and
were rushed to Suhum Government Hospital and Akim
Asafo Health Center for treatment.
According to the police, the unfortunate incident
happened at about 1:30 am on Friday with the
driver of a KIA Granbird bus with registration
number GT 5629-18 being one of the casualties.
They say upon reaching a section of the road at
Akim Asafo Junction, he made an unsafe overtaking
without observing traffic from the opposite
direction.
In the process, he crashed head-on with another
KIA Granbird bus with registration number GE
5510-15, driver also now deceased which was coming
from Kumasi direction.
The police say the bodies were removed and
deposited at Suhum Government Hospital mortuary
for preservation, identification and autopsy.
Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service and
Abundance Services from Suhum, Bunso, Kibi and
Ayensuano were on hand to assist the police.
The Suhum Motor Transport and Traffic Department
(MTTD), District Police Patrol team and Kibi MTTD
Police Command were also at the scene directing
traffic.
The accident vehicles were towed from the scene to
