DSP Asiam Divine Yao, shot himself in his Bortiman residence

3rd police officer commits suicide in less than 3 weeks
A police officer with the Legal and Prosecutions
Unit in Ashaiman has allegedly committed suicide
in Tema Community 18.

According to the Tema Regional Police Command, DSP
Asiam Divine Yao shot himself in his Bortiman
residence.

The 50-year-old reportedly died in the early hours
of Sunday, February 14, 2021, after being rushed
to the Police Hospital.

In a statement issued by the Command’s Public
Relations Officer, “investigation has already
commenced unraveling the circumstances of his
death.



“His family has also been informed,” C/Inspr.
Stella Dede Dzakpasu indicated.

This brings to three, the number of men in uniform
who have allegedly taken their own lives over the
past three weeks.

On January 30, the Half Assini District Police
Commander, Supt Cyprian Zenge was reported to have
shot himself in his house.

According to the assemblyman for the area, Kizito
Trill Erzoah, the deceased left behind a note
which read, “I am fed up”.

Two days later, another police officer with the
National Protection Unit (NPU), Constable Eugene
Yelnona reportedly committed suicide by shooting
himself in the Greater Accra Region.

On the day of the alleged incident, he was
providing security at the residence of a Togolese
opposition leader, Gilcrest Olympio who is
resident in Ghana.

According to reports, Mr Yelnona shot himself in
the washroom of the residence of the Togolese
opposition leader in the early hours of Monday,
February 1, 2021.

Meanwhile, Graphic Online reported that the
officer had requested a leave extension to seek
medical attention which was described as
“somehow psychological” but his superiors
denied his request.

Source told the Online portal, Constable Yelnona
was forced to resume his leave on Friday, January
29, 2021, and was put on guard duty at the
residence of the Togolese opposition leader at
Ridge in Accra.

His body was then found in the washroom of the
Togo opposition leader.
