Ghana’s Referees chief shocked at Joseph Lamptey’s ban The acting chairman of the Referees Association of
Ghana (RAG), Joseph Debrah has expressed shock at
the ban of referee J.O Lamptey.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on
Monday, 21st November 2016 handed a three month
suspension to the Ghanaian referee for his poor
performance during a 2018 World Cup qualifier
between South Africa and Senegal at the Peter
Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane in which he awarded a
penalty in South Africa’s favor for a handball
that never was.
Referee Joe Debrah in an interview with
Footy-Ghana.com said he was surprised because the
suspension has all but ended Lamptey’s chances
of officiating the world cup.
“I was shocked and surprised to hear this
because I knew where he was heading towards and I
know for sure he was one of the few selected for
the AFCON and I know if he had performed well, he
would have been at the World Cup,” he said. The
referee’s chief however is optimistic the
situation won’t affect the chances of other
Ghanaian referees. “CAF has a report of every
referee, and know the caliber and pedigree of
every referee in Ghana so they know those who are
good, who are average and those who are not good,
so I don’t think this one can affect them all.
“If really they mean to take someone from Ghana
to officiate, automatically they can get someone
to do so and the person will perform well,” he
concluded.
