I’ve never been a shoe shine boy – Taylor Former Black Stars skipper Charles Taylor has
denied ever being a shoe shine boy for former
Great Olympics chairman Ade Coker and his
cronies.
It has been widely reported that Charles Taylor
only got to play Great Olympics, after spending
time polishing the shoes of the club’s
management.
Setting the records straight on Entertainment
Capital on Accra100.5FM on Saturday October 29,
the former Hearts of Oak striker said he had never
been a shoe shine boy.
“Maybe those rumours opened doors for God to
bless me, after all I am not more human than the
shoe shine boy on the street. Somebody can build a
house from being a shoe shine boy while a banker
may not be able to build. But I have never been a
shoe shine boy although I appreciate it as a
job,” he told show host DJ Premier.
Explaining why he could be referred to as a shoe
shine boy, Charles Taylor said: “When Great
Olympics wanted to sign me for the 1999/2000
season, there was disagreement over money. They
wanted to pay me GHS50 but my manager insisted on
GHS150. After training one day, in the full glare
of spectators, Ade Coker said if I did not want to
play I could leave, saying I could probably be a
shoe shine boy. So, that has stuck till now, but
I’m not a shoe shine boy and have never done
that.”
Charles Taylor was part of Ghana’s 2004 Olympic
football team that exited in the first round of
the competition, having finished in third place in
Group B. He was a silver medallist with Ghana’s
U-20 team, the Black Satellites, at the 2001
Africa Youth Championship in Ethiopia. Taylor
represented the Black Stars at the 2009 African
Nations Championship in Côte d'Ivoire, where they
placed second, losing to finalists DR Congo. Source - AccraFM
