NPP rejects Sports Minister's ‘shoddy’ 'dishonest' AFCON 2015 budget The Minority in Parliament have voiced their
displeasure that Government, without parliamentary
scrutiny, spent Ghc17.9million on the Black Stars
during the recent AFCON 2015 tournament in
Equatorial Guinea.
Spokesperson on Youth and Sports Isaac Kwame
Asiamah told Joy News that the Sports Minister
Mahama Ayariga “exhibited complete incompetence
and ignorance” about proper financial
administration.
After weeks of public speculations, the Sports
Ministry has eventually revealed that Government
approved about GH₵17.9million to fund
Ghana’s participation in the AFCON 2015 event in
Equatorial Guinea.
Sports Minister Mahama Ayariga revealed the
figures while taking questions on the floor of
Parliament Wednesday. The minister had expressed
unwillingness to reveal details of the budget
before the tournament.
However, his delivery has come under scrutiny
after the Minority rejected a budget they describe
as a “half budget”.
NPP MP for Atwima Mponua dismissed the budget
saying “it lacks the spirit of sound financial
governance….it is shoddy work because the
Minister did not “indicate your income and
expenditure”.
He feels Parliament is being taken for a ride by
the attitude of the minister, whom he deemed
disrespectful.
The NPP spokesperson revealed that on the 18th
December, the Minority had asked for the proposed
expenditure earmarked for the games.
Parliament, he said had been assured they will be
provided details of the budget before the January
17th tournament but this never happened. Source - Joy News
