Nabil Fekir will join Algeria after the 2015 AFCON Ghana's 2015 AFCON opponents Algeria will be without talented Nabil Fekir Algeria will be without Olympique Lyon star Nabil
Fekir at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nation’s despite
the forward’s decision to play for the Greens.
The 21-year-old has dual nationality having been
born to Algerian parents in France – meaning he
can play international football for Les Bleus.
But the attacking midfielder has resolved to play
for Algeria but considers the 2015 Africa Cup of
Nations – which kicks off in January – as too
soon to make the switch as he strives to cement
his position at his club.
“I’ve met with the president of the Algerian
Football Association, Mohamed Raouraoua. We talked
about a lot of things concerning Nabil, he totally
understands the situation of Nabil and the fact
that he’s not yet ready to join Les Verts in the
African Cup of Nations in the beginning of next
year,” the player’s father, Mohamed said.
“I have to be honest here; a lot of important
matches are ahead of Nabil in Ligue 1 and he
hasn’t yet cemented his place in the starting 11
for Olympique Lyonnais.
“In addition, we’ve had talks with his agent
and we’ve agreed that it’s still too early for
him to play for the Algeria national team; bearing
in mind that he might be injured in the African
Cup of Nations, which would mean losing his place
at the club.”
Algeria were hoping to have Fekir join their squad
for their 2015 AFCON where they are drawn in a
tough group alongside Ghana, South Africa and
Senegal.
Greens coach Christian Gourcuff will however be
without the talented youngster who has scored six
goals and provided five assists in 13 appearances
for Lyon this season.
