CAF refuses to postpone 2015 AFCON; hosts Morocco has SIX days to confirm The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have
announced they will not postpone next year’s
AFCON and have given Morocco till Saturday to
decide if they would still be willing to stage the
tournament.
In a statement posted on their official website
Monday, CAF executive committee maintained the
2015 AFCON will go ahead between January 17 and
February 8.
“Unanimity was reached (after the CAF executive
committee meeting) on keeping the competition on
the dates originally agreed, namely from January
17 to February 8, 2015…”, stated CAF while
giving several reasons for their position.
CAF stated that they have organised several
competitions since the outbreak of Ebola and there
has been no health incident in this respect.
They also argued that Morocco’s health system
will be more than able to cope with the limited
human traffic to the country for the 2015 AFCON.
CAF further said a shift of the AFCON will affect
their own calendar as well as that of the
international calendar.
CAF have therefore requested hosts Morocco to
communicate their final position on staging the
competition within those dates not later than
Saturday after they raised concerns about the
outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in West
Africa.
Morocco had proposed the competition be moved till
June 2015 or January 2016 by that time the Ebola
outbreak would have been fully contained.
CAF executive are expected to take a final
decision on the hosting of the competition on
November 11 in Cairo, Egypt.
They have already sounded out other countries over
the possibility of hosting the biennial
competition at short notice.
