Hayford delighted with Ghana's winning start After seeing his side edge hosts Canada to victory
in their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign,
Ghana coach Bashir Hayford remains upbeat about
his team's chances.
Ghana claimed all three points in the Group A
match on Tuesday with Sherifatu Sumaila scoring to
hand the Black Princesses a 1-0 win.
Hayford has hailed his team after beating the
Young Canucks but insists the victory was well
earned.
"It was a good game, I appreciated all that I've
seen tonight. And at the end of the day, the best
team won," said Hayford in Toronto.
"We already learnt our first lesson: in a World
Cup, nothing will be easy. We suffered, but we
won."
Ghana now come up against Korea DPR, winners of
the tournament in 2006 on Friday.
The Koreans lead the standing with a better goal
difference after winning 2-1 against Finland.
For Hayford, Ghana will need to advance from the
group stage before thinking about the possibility
of landing a dream World Cup can be made real.
However, he believes the Black Princesses have the
potential to be contenders.
"I had said before the tournament that we had the
potential to win the World Cup. I don’t know if
we’ll do it, but we do see some signs," he
said.
"And we sent a signal that we’re not here for
fun - we’re here for business. If I didn’t
want to win the World Cup, we wouldn’t be here."
