Barclays’ chief executive takes little interest in sport League may need new champion as Barclays blows the final whistle Barclays is likely to end its sponsorship of major
sporting brands such as the football Premier
League and tennis’s ATP World Tour, as chief
executive Antony Jenkins cracks down on glamorous
frivolities at the bank.
In the post-Bob Diamond era, the bank is
conducting a review of all its sponsorship deals
and is likely to drop high-profile, expensive
ones. The £40 million-a-year Premier League
sponsorship comes up for renewal in 2016 and is
unlikely to continue, according to a source.
Barclays recently signalled that its £25 million
sponsorship of Boris bikes in London will end in
2015.
“Bob Diamond is a big football fan and Antony
[Jenkins] less so,” said a source, adding that
the decision was therefore “likely to be more
commercial and less emotional”. The bank’s
controversial former chief executive was an avid
supporter of Chelsea Football Club but Mr Jenkins
takes little interest in the sport. Source - The Times, UK
