Hearts beats Ashgold to go joint-top with Kotoko
Hearts of Oak put up an inspired performance to
move joint-top with Asante Kotoko on Sunday after
winning at home.

The Phobians proved too strong for 10-man
AshantiGold as they finished 3-2 winners at the
Accra Sports Stadium.

Douglas Nkrumah put Hearts in front after 34
minutes from the spot as the Phobians entered the
break 1-0 up.

Back from recess, Mahatma Otoo doubled the scoring
for the home side before Mohammed Yakubu pulled
one back for AshantiGold.

The Miners were reduced to ten men after John
Ashong was sent off for a second bookable offence
in the 74 minute.

Hearts scored their third goal with eight minutes
remaining before Yakubu got the consolation in
injury time.

The win lifts Hearts to second as they are level
on points with rivals, Kotoko on the standings
ahead of the mid-week matches.

Kotoko draw

Asante Kotoko could only settle for a point at
home as they kicked off the New Year in a rather
unconvincing manner in the Glo Premier League.

The Porcupine Warriors drew goalless with visiting
Aduana Stars and see their lead at the summit cut
as rivals, Hearts of Oak are now level on points
with two matches to end the first round.

Ahmed Toure's absence from the team appeared to
have robbed Asante Kotoko off the much needed
finishing as Nathaniel Asamoah could not go past
the resolute display at the back by Aduana.

Defending league champions on the low

Berekum Chelsea were held to a 0-0 draw in Wa by
All Stars on Sunday as they drop out of the top
four in the Glo Premier League.

The result leaves Chelsea chasing their first win
after a winless run of five successive games.

Chelsea's last win came on match-day-8 of the
competition and the champions would savour a point
from Wa after a defender had to clear the ball off
the line in the final minutes against All Stars.

They return to the Golden City Park for the
midweek derby with Berekum Arsenals.
