Harrison Afful in action for Esperance in the Caf Champions League
Harrison Afful named African Player of the Month Ghana defender Harrison Afful has been named
Goal.com’s African Player of the Month for
November.
After missing out on the first leg of the Caf
Champions League final against Wydad in Casablanca
on 6 November, Afful was back in Nabil Maaloul’s
starting lineup one week later to play a crucial
role in what was undoubtedly the most important
match of his club career thus far.
The Ghanaian replaced the more defensive-minded
Idrissa Coulibaly and took little time to make his
mark on the game.
On 18 minutes, the Black Stars representative
expertly brought down a cross-field Khaled Korbi
pass in the penalty box and evaded his marker
before unleashing a beautiful curling effort with
his weaker left foot.
The goal ended up being the only one of the
encounter, and Afful is now certain to remain an
Esperance legend given that it was his strike
which ended the Blood and Gold’s African
heartache.
After the title win, Afful was modest about his
accomplishment, stressing that he couldn’t have
offered Esperance fans that kind of joy without
the help of his team-mates.
Whatever the case, the Beb Souika outfit are
headed to Japan for the Club World Cup and have a
chance of a dream encounter against Barcelona,
thanks in large part to their Ghanaian import.
“We have to respect all teams and not focus on
Barcelona alone. The tournament is not going to be
easy but I personally want us to go a step ahead
of TP Mazembe in last year’s event and bring the
cup to Africa,” he recently declared to
