Javier Hernandez gives Manchester United the lead against Chelsea Champions League: Man U 2 - 1 Chelsea Manchester United won through to the semi-finals
of the Champions League with a 2-1 victory over
10-man Chelsea at Old Trafford for a 3-1 aggregate
success.
Already a goal up from the away leg, United took
the lead two minutes before the break through
Javier Hernandez who had earlier had a diving
header ruled out for offside.
Chelsea were caught out by a clever pass from John
O'Shea who played Ryan Giggs in behind Nicolas
Anelka on the right. Giggs crossed low for
Hernandez to slot home from close range at the far
post.
The Blues' task became even harder when Ramires
was sent off for a second bookable offence after
fouling Nani from behind 20 minutes from time.
But the Barclays Premier League champions rallied
seven minutes later when Michael Essien
brilliantly picked out Didier Drogba who
controlled neatly and brought his side level on
the night with a firm low drive from the right of
goal.
One more goal would have sent the London side
through on away goals but within a minute United
had regained their lead on the night.
Again it was the evergreen Giggs who set it up,
slipping a cute pass for Park Ji-sung to ram a low
shot past Petr Cech.
United saw out the match strongly to stay on track
for a place in the final at Wembley on 28th May.
They now face Schalke or Inter Milan in the
semi-final.
