Real Madrid lose to Sporting Gijon ahead of Tottenham clash Jose Mourinho suffered the worst possible result
before Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final
when he lost his unbeaten run of 150 homeleague
games and all but conceded the Spanish title. The
only consolation for Real Madrid fans was their
coach hinting Cristiano Ronaldo WILL play against
Tottenham on Tuesday. No way, Jose: Mourinho
suffered his first home league defeat for nine
years at the hands of Sporting Gijon 'Ronaldo can
play only if we take a risk,' said Mourinho. 'The
medical staff have told me he should come back on
Saturday against Bilbao. Iif he decides he wants
to take a risk and Ii decide he should take a
risk, then we can go past the medical advice and
he will play.' It seems certain Ronaldo will
return after this dismal performance, though
Mourinho was less optimistic about in-form striker
Karim Benzema. Head in hands: Sergio Ramos can't
bare to look as Real Madrid are surprisingly
beaten Mourinho said: 'The medical staff have told
me that while can't play until the weekend and
Marcelo also has to be out until the weekend,
Benzema could even be out until the return leg
against Tottenham.' Benzema will be sorely missed
in attack. Emmanuel Adebayor stepped in and missed
chance after chance as Real blew their slim title
hopes. Delight: Sporting Gijon's midfielder Miguel
de las Cuevas celebrates his winner 'While it's
still mathematically possible, you have to say
it's practically impossible now,' said Mourinho
after Miguel de las Cuevas gave Sporting Gijon a
1-0 win. Mourinho went into Sporting's dressing
room after the game to congratulate their players
and said: 'You can lose with dignity and we did
that. The players have no reason to be distraught.
Luck is part of the game and they had all the
luck. Against Tottenham it will be very a
different.' The defeat was masterminded by Manuel
Preciado, who called Mourinho a 'swine and a bad
professional' when the two coaches clashed after
Mourinho said Gijon had fielded a weakened team
against Barcelona. Source - Football.co.uk
