Kan Dapaah justifies military protection for public officials The Minister-designate for National Security,
Albert Kan Dapaah has justified the deployment of
officers of the Ghana Armed Forces as security
details for some public officials.
According to him, the development where some
Ministers of state and heads of state agencies are
protected by the military personnel instead of the
police administration is crucial.
He made these comments during his session before
Parliament’s Appointments Committee Wednesday.
He is part of over 40 sector and regional
ministers nominated by President Akufo-Addo to
serve in his second term.
Addressing the vetting panel, Mr Kan Dapaah
explained the decisions are taken when
intelligence indicates that “a particular
individual has a problem and people are after his
life, and we think there is a danger.”
“Anywhere you have seen soldiers having to
protect a certain individual, it is because in our
assessment, in the assessment of the security
experts, there is the need to for such support to
be given to that particular person.”
He further indicated that the Ghana Police Service
who are tasked to facilitate internal security are
sometimes not up to the task when it comes to the
level of security equipment needed for specific
cases, warranting the employment of military.
“Clearly, the Ghana Police Service and the
others security agencies, in terms of equipment
and men, have never had the full complement of
what it takes to provide the most effective
policing in the country,” he responded to a
follow-up question posed by Minority Leader Haruna
Iddrisu.
Mr Kan Dapaah also said such security support was
not limited to ministers and other high profile
members of society.
“I do know of a journalist that we continue to
provide security cover and security support to,”
he added.
The Minister-designate has been nominated for the
same portfolio he held in the last
administration.
