Major Mahama Major Mahama bill passed Ghana’s Parliament has approved a bill that will
make the spouse and children of Major Maxwell
Mahama the state’s responsibility.
The bill was introduced in Parliament Tuesday,
October 24 in fulfilment of President Nana
Akufo-Addo's promise to the family of Major
Mahama, a military officer lynched by a mob in
Denkyira-Obuasi now New Oboase.
The soldier was murdered in May 2017 after
residents of the Central Region town allegedly
mistook him for an armed robber.
His death sparked debate in the country over the
spate of mob justice.
The President pledged his government’s
commitment to ensure the welfare of the children
and wife of the late soldier.
He announced the setting up of a memorial Trust
Fund with ¢500,000 as seed money.
The President also offered a personal
contribution of ¢50,000 towards the Trust.
“It is a signal to the people of Ghana that when
you die in service, the state will not leave you.
It is a new beginning but already there are
adequate provisions in the Ghana Armed Forces in
such situations,” Defence Minister, Dominic
Nitiwul has said.
