Police officers on duty 2 killed in fresh Nkonya-Alavanyo conflict Two people believed to be Nkonyas have been killed
in renewed clashes between their ethnic group and
age-old rivals, the Alavanyos in the Volta
Region.
It is not clear what led to the renewed clashes
but police say gunshots were fired from the
Alavanyo side, according to soldiers who monitored
the attack on the ground.
The incident took place despite a curfew on the
area which was renewed on Wednesday.
Kpando Divisional Police Commander Superintendent
Prosper Ahlijah said “two people were shot dead
and two injured at Nkonya Ahenkro around 7 to
8’Oclock in the evening.”
“It was an attack from the Alavanyos,” he told
Accra-based Joy FM on Thursday monring.
Asked how he could confirm that the perpetrators
were Alavanyos, Supt. Ahlijah said: “The
soldiers on the ground, they were monitoring
events because the attack was coming from that
direction.”
Meanwhile, Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald
Letsa, says the Regional Security Coordinating
Council intends holding an emergency meeting
today, Thursday over the issue so as to ensure
things do not get out of hand.
There is intense enmity between the two
communities who have been fighting over a patch of
land territory for almost a century.
