Ghana to maintain 50 troops in Gambia Fifty Ghanaian troops will continue to be
stationed at The Gambia as a stabilisation force,
says President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Ghana originally deployed 208 troops to take part
in the first ECOWAS mission which was meant to
unseat former Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh who had
refused to leave power despite losing elections.
Even though ECOWAS did not need to use force, the
stationing of the troops in Senegal was enough to
convince Yahya Jammeh to step down.
President Akufo-Addo told parliament when he
delivered his maiden State of the Nations Address
Tuesday.
He said The Gambian mission has not ended adding
that Ghana will leave behind 50 troops.
Meanwhile The Gambia over the weekend, sworn-in
President Adama Barrow who won the 2016 election
unseating the country’s long-serving leader,
Yahya Jammeh.
