‘I’ve no new UN appointment’ – Mahama Former President John Dramani Mahama says he has
not been given any new appointment by the United
Nations as is being suggested.
Some media reports quoted the former president as
having described his appointment by the UN
co-chair a session on Sustainable Development
Goals (SDG) with the Prime Minister Erna Solberg
of Norway as humbling.
The reports quoted Mr Mahama as having posted on
his Facebook account that the appointment speaks
volumes about Ghana’s leadership on the path of
sustainable development.
“It proves not only that we are on the right
track, but also that we lead the way. The world is
proud of us, and this makes me extremely proud of
each and every one of you!,” the reports quoted
the president.
However, Mr Mahama has denied such new
appointment this year as suggested, and clarified
his UN appointment to co-chair the SDG advocacy
group was in January 2016.
“Folks! I have no new UN appointment. The
Co-chair of SDG advocacy group appointment was
last year January when I was President,” he
posted on his official Twitter account late
Sunday, few hours after the reports surfaced.
Mr Mahama added “what many are sharing are the
UN statement from January 2016 announcing the
appointment & my statements at the 2016 Davos
Forum”.
Former President Mahama exited office on January
7, 2017 having lost the December 7, 2016
presidential election to President Nana Addo
Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Prior to his leaving office, he
was appointed to co-chair the ECOWAS mediation
committee that tried to resolve the political
impasse in the Gambia.
