Two children drown in manhole Two children have drowned in an abandoned manhole
at Budumburam zone 11, near Kasoa in the Central
region.
The children, Maa Lizzy aka Nhyira and Yaw Israel,
two years and one and a half years respectively,
were said to be playing there when the unfortunate
incident happened.
A relative of one of the deceased, Osafo Isaiah
told Adom News’s Kofi Adjei, that there was no
one at home to stop them from going to the
manhole.
The parents, are said to have left for the market
leaving the children behind.
The manhole was said to be full due to heavy
downpour the previous days.
“They were two years and one year and half
respectively. Maa Lizzy and Nhyira.
It rained heavily last Thursday and that made the
manhole very full. It happened around 2pm Tuesday
when they were playing."
They suspect the children they decided to wash
their feet in what they thought was a pool of
water after playing, but, unknown to them, the
pool was rather a manhole filled with water.
In the process of washing their feet, they slipped
into the manhole and drowned.
Osafo Isaiah said to prevent a future occurence,
“we will rebuild the walls of the manhole and
drain the water out for the mean time.”
Meanwhile, a school boy who chanced upon the scene
said “the manhole was about 8 feet and had been
abandoned for a long time. I saw them in the
manhole when I was returning back from
school…”
The bodies have been deposited at St. Gregory
Catholic hospital’s morgue.
