Ex-NPP executives abandon party’s MP to support independent candidate

At least 12 former executives of the New Patriotic
Party in the Sunyani East Constituency have
abandoned their parliamentary candidate support an
independent candidate, George Kumi.

According to the former executives, the fortunes
of the NPP in the constituency has been narrowed
due to divisions, which they say require a unifier
like Mr Kumi to strengthen, especially going into
Wednesday’s elections.

Mr Kumi, who is a former ambassador to Libya and
Nigeria under the Kufuor administration, lost the
NPP primary by a single vote to incumbent member
of parliament, KwasiAmeyaw-Cheremeh.

Dissatisfied with the electoral processes and the
outcome, Mr Kumi opted to contest the
parliamentary election as an independent candidate
because he said he was not fairly treated by the
party.

The former NPP executives and other party members
at the weekend showed up at a rally organised by
Mr Kumi to crown his campaign where they declared
their unflinching support for him.

Led by James Osei Oppong Asare, the immediate past
constituency chairman and Sampson Dankwa, a member
of the party’s constituency council of elders,
the former executives and their followers declared
they would vote for Mr Kumi as against their
party’s candidate, Mr Ameyaw-Cheremeh.

Mr Kumi has meanwhile, lauded the decision of the
former executives to join his camp for victory in
Wednesday’s polls.

He also thanked all his followers for their
support during his campaign journey. He said he is
hopeful of winning the seat from Mr
Ameyaw-Cheremeh to spearhead development in the
constituency to ensure improvement in the lives of
the people who he urged to vote for him on
Wednesday.

Mr Kumi said of prime concern when given the nod
will be to tackle of the issue of dilapidated
school buildings, inadequate desks for schools as
well as lack of sanitary facilities, especially in
public schools in the constituency.

On the issue of youth unemployment, he said he has
enrolled 75 youth in the constituency into various
apprenticeship programmes all of who will be given
start-up tools on graduation to enable them start
their on businesses.

He has thus appealed to the electorate to reflect
on what he has done in the constituency in his
individual capacity, and vote for him on December
7 so that he can get the opportunity to bring more
development to the area.
