Speed up investigations and bring perpetrators to book – NCCE urges Police The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE)
has urged the Police to as a matter of urgency
investigate all pockets of electoral violence
particularly between the NDC and NPP and deal with
perpetrators according to the law.
Against the backdrop of the brewing political
violence as the country goes to the polls December
7, the NCCE asked the main political parties, the
NPP and NDC to assert positive political authority
and values over their supporters and restrain them
in acts of violence.
The NCCE gave the advice in a statement to herald
the International Tolerance Day, which would be
marked Wednesday, November 16,2016.
“As the world marks International Tolerance Day,
NCCE entreats all Ghanaians to tolerate divergent
views, live in harmony with each other and foster
national unity as enjoined by Article 41 (c) of
the 1992 Constitution of Ghana,” the commission
said in its statement Tuesday.
It further noted that “Ghana has been acclaimed
as the beacon of African democracy and an oasis of
peace in the sub-region. As Ghanaians, we must
hold fast to this and work towards ensuring peace
before, during and after the presidential and
parliamentary elections to consolidate the gains
made in our democratic journey.”
The NCCE’s remarks follow Sunday’s chaos at
the Nima residence of Nana Akufo Addo that saw an
NDC group clashed with security personnel guarding
the former Attorney General’s home.
The NDC supporters who were on a Regional health
walk reportedly upon reaching the residence of
Nana Akufo Addo, unprovoked, started throwing
stones and bottles at the house.
The action by the NDC group was met with fierce
resistance as bodyguards of the three-time
Presidential candidate sensing danger responded
with warning shots, dispersing the NDC crowd in
the process.
Some NPP supporters who heard of the incident also
rushed to Nana Akufo Addo’s residence to offer
backup for the security detail who reports said
were being overpowered by the milling crowd.
