Exporters downplay effect of elections on business Despite concerns raised by some Ghanaians about a
slowdown in business activities due to the
upcoming elections, some importers and exporters
have downplayed the effect on their businesses.
According to them, business activities are moving
on smoothly and will be uninterrupted by the time
the general elections are held.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export
Promotion Authority, James Tigah told Citi
Business News the current election brouhaha is not
affecting trading activities.
According to him, various countries are still
interested in importing products from Ghana.
“So you realize that Ivory Coast is importing
from Ghana, Burkina is importing from Ghana and
all of these are beyond 10 million dollars. So you
see that they are not shying away.” he said.
He said that the export industry is not facing any
challenges due to the upcoming elections.
“The election has no effect on the exporter
market,” he said.
Effect of election on other sectors
Already some currency analysts have said that the
activities of speculators which cause the cedi to
depreciate against some major trading currencies
may have minimal impact on the currency during
this election season.
The comments come on the back of concerns among
some industry watchers of possible distortions to
the cedi’s performance ahead of the elections.
The financial institutions have therefore bemoaned
the lack of investment opportunities derived from
investors in the fourth quarter.
