Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, Chief Imam Analyst fears finding Chief Imam’s successor could lead to chaos A student of the Islamic religion is proposing for
the state to give constitutional backing to the
Office of the National Chief Imam, in order to
obviate any clashes among Muslim sects in choosing
his successor.
According to Irbard Ibrahim, there is a seething
struggle among the various sects in the country
over who should succeed 91-year-old Chief Imam,
Dr. Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu.
Speaking on the Joy FM Super Morning Show,
Wednesday, December 10, 2014, the Islamic
political analyst said the issue has become a
“Taboo topic” among believers of the Islam
faith because of its sensitive nature.
According to him the nation must take interest in
“the issue of a possible succession plan for the
office of the National Chief Imam” because “he
has kept this country both in body and spirit in
times that we have seen sporadic cases of
inter-faith violence.
“But that notwithstanding we can’t live in a
state of denial about the inevitable eventuality.
What is the legislative provision for the position
of the National Chief Imam? We’ve started seeing
some palpable fissures among the various Muslim
sects that we have in this country.”
He called for an open debate on the issue
“Because there will be contending forces that
will like to occupy the position as and when the
man eventually leaves the world.”
Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu is an Islamic scholar
and member of the National Peace Council. He is
founder of the Dr. Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu
Education Trust Fund (SONSETFund) as well as the
Islamic Peace and Security Council (IPASEC).
