Protracted Kumawu chieftaincy row festers Tension is brewing in Kumawu due to an alleged
attempt by kingmakers to install a new chief for
the area.
The Kumawu stool has been vacant for nearly seven
years, since the death of Barima Asumadu Sakyi
II.
There was a similar incident a few months back,
when separate attempts were allegedly made by
Queen mother Nana Serwa Amponsah to enstool a
chief. The move was fiercely resisted even though
it was done under heavy security.
The Kumasi High Court 4, last Friday, threw out an
application for interlocutory injunction filed by
Aduana Abusuapanin of the area, who sought to
restrict the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the
Asanteman Council and five others, from engaging
in any activity that could lead to the
installation of the Kumawu chief in the Sekyere
Afram Plains District of the Ashanti Region.
The elders of the town alleged that the Queen
Mother greased the palms of the kingmakers to
facilitate the installation of Dr Yaw Sarfo,
against the will of the people.
They argued that Dr Sarfo is not the rightful heir
to the throne.
The court, on Friday October 17, 2014, rejected a
secret tape recording, on which a voice purported
to be that of the Queen Mother is heard allegedly
admitting to bribing the kingmakers to do her
bidding.
An appeal was later filed to contest the ruling.
The Ashanti Monarch met the kingmakers in-camera
on Monday October 20, at his palace towards
finding lasting solution to the protracted
dispute.
The meeting, Ultimate FM Reporter Joseph Oppong
Brenya reports, was, however, mistaken as another
attempt to install a new chief on the blind side
of the people of Kumawu, according to the
Abusuapanin.
The Abusuapanin, has therefore vowed to resist Dr
Sarfo’s installation, which he argues
contravenes the customs of Kumawu, hence their
decision to appeal against the ruling by the High
Court. Source - Starrfmonline
