“Stop sampling old hymns”- OJ tells gospel musicians Inspirational speaker, singer, composer and
performer, Michael Oware Sakyi, who is known in
show business as O.J has advised Gospel musicians
to stop sampling old Pentecostal hymns and compose
their own songs.
“If the musicians of old did not do hard work by
producing the hymns we are singing today, what
would we have done? Have we asked ourselves those
questions? I think that, we should rather pray to
God to give us the strength He gave them to come
out with those wonderful songs so that we can also
leave behind something for the next generation
instead of always reproducing what they have left
behind,” he said.
He was however quick to add that he was not
totally condemning sampling hymns and old songs.
“I am not totally condemning singing hymns but I
think it shouldn't be the mainstream songs on our
albums. Maybe once in a while we can sing a hymn
on an album, but as I have said the focus
shouldn't be on the old songs. We should also work
hard for our generation ahead of us. If not, we
can't feed our generation and the generation ahead
of us with songs,” OJ added.
“One thing we gospel musicians must put in our
heads is that the Scripture says we 'sing unto the
Lord a new song,' meaning God wants to always have
new songs sang to his praise but not old songs.
Even God renews His mercies for us each blessed
day. He doesn't use the old mercies. So we as
musicians must also do new things unto the
Lord,” he reiterated.
