It is impossible for the church to stay out of politics – Methodist Bishop The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church
Ghana, Most Reverend Prof Emmanuel Asante is
encouraging the church as an institution to
continue to play its watchful role in the
country’s politics.
According to Reverend Asante, the church cannot be
ignored if order and sanity is to manifest in the
governance system of the country because “the
church has always been in politics and the church
as an institution within Ghana cannot stay out of
politics”.
Most Reverend Prof Asante spoke to Citi News on
the sidelines of a public lecture organised by the
methodist church of Ghana where he intimated that
Ghanaians must appreciate the importance of the
church and accept its pronouncements on national
issues.
He said “I’m not saying that the church should
be involved in partisan politics, as in
identifying itself with any political party, that
I will not go for, but the church as an
institution within the political setup of Ghana
has always been involved in politics and yet
anytime a statement is made, people put a
political spin on it.
“It depends upon who is in power, if the church
makes a statement that is not palatable to an
existing government, people interpret it, they put
a political spin on it and that is why people
would say the church should stay out of politics
but the church has always been in politics and the
church as an institution within Ghana cannot stay
out of politics.
“The church would not stay out of politics
because it is impossible for the church to stay
out. To stay out of politics means you have to
leave this world. So long as you are a citizen of
this country, whether you like it or not, you are
a part of the political history of this
country”.
